The Old Carriage House is located in scenic Jasper, Arkansas, in a historic carriage house. Originally built in the 1880s, it sat next to a large Victorian home one block from the Court House Square. The house burned, and all that was left was the carriage house with tack room, stalls and hay shoots. There was talk of burning the barn to get it out of the way for construction of a new business.
George and Lois Cheryl Landrum, a local couple, protested the destruction of such a landmark. |

The couple were given the opportunity to move the building. They made the arrangements and moved it to the Southern edge of town to a backdrop of lush, steep hillside. After doing necessary repairs, they sold the Carriage House to a potter who lived and worked there for several years. That business closed and the building sat empty for a several months.
On one of her frequent visits to Newton County, artist Rebecca Holden found herself drawn to the picturesque barn in the curve, which she purchased in February 2000. She then began what she affectionately called the "Carriage House Project."
Although only the loft area was available for exhibition space, she opened the doors for business the last weekend of June 2000 during the annual Elk Festival. Since then,
Holden has renovated the majority of the barn for gallery space and has added a working pottery studio at the back of the building.
Holden exhibits both her work and the work of other Ozark artists in the gallery, and several artists use the studio space to create their original works.
